My Mirror Moment

Real stories from first-generation students, medical students and physicians

1What this will be

Everyone in medicine can name a moment when the goal stopped feeling far away. Maybe it was meeting a doctor who grew up in your neighborhood, passing a class you were told was too hard, or putting on scrubs for the first time. This page will collect those moments, so the next student can see themselves in them.

High school

The first time medicine felt possible

College

Finding a mentor when no one in the family knew the path

Medical school

The white coat, and who was in the room

2Share your story

If you're a first-generation student, medical student or physician, we'd love to feature you. To be considered, email a few paragraphs answering any of these questions:

  • When did you first see yourself in medicine?
  • What did you wish someone had told you sooner?
  • Who helped you, and how?
  • What would you tell a student who feels like they don't belong?
